Brief History of the Holy Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s church was build in 1929 by the Jesuit Fathers from Poland. The first parish priest was Fr. Joseph Sidel, a very old man with grey beard. He was staying at Caritas Convent where there was a parish house for the priest.

Two Dominican sisters, Sr. Barbara and Sr. Godfrida were coming with him everyday as the two were teachers. One was teaching in the Standard Two and the other on in Standard Three.

I came to St. Mary’s in 1948 and started learning in Standard One, until I completed Standard Four in 1952; and then I went to Kasisi Mission to do my Standard Five and Six.

In those days there was no bishop for the whole Deanery, only Monsignor Bruno Wolnick who was in charge of administering confirmation.

The first African priests to be ordained in 1951 were, late Stephen Luwisha, retired bishop Adrian Mugandu, Stanislas Chibelo and Fr. John Kalale who is still alive.

The first bishop for this area was Cardinal Adam who was appointed in 1958 by the Pope Pius XII. He was succeeded by his grace Emmanuel Milingo in 1969 after independence in 1964.
