Distant Adoption

:: The Children’s Background :: Most children who are helped by the programme ‘Distant Adoption’ are orphans who live under the care of their grandparents or some other close relavites. In most cases the children lost their parents due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic which affects the Southern Sahara Africa. The children of Distant Adoption-Kabwe live mostly in Makululu (the biggest township of Zambia, on the outskirts of  Kabwe city). After our visit to the Makululu compund we have  found out more about the families of the children and their living conditions. The children live in hats which are made up of mostly two rooms (one for the kitchen and living, while the other is for the bedroom where children and their guardian sleep together). The children walk daily to the various schools in which they are registered such as Angelina Tembo (run by sisters); Mukobeko High School (a government school); St Mary’s School (a government school); Mine School (a government school); among others. Once they come back from school the children are meant to help at home with the chores of fetching water, collecting dry sticks for the cooking, etc. Once these chores are met, they have free  to do their  homework; we need to consider that none of them has a house with electricity nor water services, which means they study while they enjoy the daylight and if necessary  they use  candle at night. The children in the photos live with their maternal grandmother from the time they became orphans. They live on what the grandmother will raise on the day through doing some chores for other people and also through the charitable work o fthe Home Based Care programme that supplies them with some maize flour from time to time since they also risk becoming sick of tuberculosis that affects many in the slums. The constructions are made of mud-bricks and the roof is in most cases of iron-sheets put together and pressed down by stones or some other heavy material to avoid being blown away by the wind. Despite these hard living conditions the children registered with the programme Distant Adoption can still look at the future with hope because through the generosity of the Polish Families that share their financial resources with them they have more chances to get on with  life. There are many more out there who still need someone who can look at them with love and generously sponsor their education.
