The Salesians of Don Bosco first came to Kabwe in 1986 when we took over St Mary’s Parish with its 11 outstations. Due to the lack of personnel the salesian work was mainly concentrated in the parish, though the salesians had always in mind the work with the young people and it was the main challenge since the people of Kabwe were not used to the idea of priests working directly with the young.
On February 1992 Mons. Adrian Mungandu, Archbishop of Lusaka consecrated the new church in Makululu which was build by Fr Joseph Bem. The Salesian Community of Kabwe was officially erected in 2003, under the patronage of Bl Artemide Zatti. From the beginning the project for Kabwe was to build a Youth Centre.
The first Salesian in Kabwe was Fr Walter Kloc. It was a surprised to many to hear that the Salesians were already in Kabwe. Years after the construction of the church in Makululu under the name of Don Bosco, the late Fr Joseph Ojczyk started the construction of the new church which until now is under construction.
At the moment there three Salesians in the community: Fr Andrew (Rector and Parish Priest); Fr Christopher Rychcyk (Novice master), Fr Gilbert Twahirwa (assistant parish priest) and Bro Alphonsius Hamweete.
